Dissection of a Digital Illustration

Point of View

The collaboration process between the artist and the art director is not that different than traditional illustration. But the process I go through to do 3D is quite a bit different.
One of the first steps is to create a camera and try to nail down a point of view.

  Comments:
This is an early rendering that I did for my own eyes only, trying to determine the point of view to take. The point of view was kind of tricky in this case, because we need to see some very small things, like the frog, close up, and yet keep some very large things, like the pond and the orchard, in view in the distance. To see the frog reasonably close up, the point of view had to be very low.
I like to get the camera angle nailed down early on, if possible, because if you change it just a little, all the objects in the scene are suddenly in an entirely different position in the image.
I used this 3D rendering as the basis for the first pencil sketches.
